Like my grandparents, parents, and siblings, my career role has been as an educator, both teacher and academic administrator. My avocation, similar to my parents, has been performing music. My mother was a pianist and accompanied choral groups in church and in college. My father was a good singer and enjoyed singing in church and on social occasions. None of us were extraordinary musicians in any way although I believe that our lyricism linked music to other parts of our lives. An avocation can enrich one’s life and bring fulfillment that a career often does not touch on. I feel lucky to have caught both the education and music bugs from my ancestors.
